Letter: Don't let hatred of a few ruin acceptance in area

To my American Indian friends, I am sorry.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, my white ancestors abducted tens of thousands of African people. To my African American friends, I am sorry.
In the 19th century, my white ancestors excluded Mexican-American citizens from the full rights afforded other American citizens. To my Latino friends, I am sorry.
In the 20th century, my white ancestors created federal laws to discriminate against and detain Chinese and Japanese residents. To my Asian friends, I am sorry.
Today in the St. Cloud area, a few citizens are expressing messages of hatred and intolerance toward Somali Americans.
To my Muslim friends, I am sorry.
To say I am sorry does not come close to making up for the acts of exclusion and racism my friends and neighbors of color have endured.
To my white friends and neighbors, I beg of you not to tolerate this fear-mongering and bigotry in Central Minnesota.
To my Muslim friends, please know that appalling acts like these are few and far between.
Please accept this apology on behalf of the majority of us those who believe you are wonderful, you are welcome and that you add social, moral, civic and cultural richness to this community.
